New Engineering Investment for Groveley

Tuesday 12th October 2004

Groveley Engineering has taken delivery of a new sliding head lathe that will enable it to produce intricate parts for the gas detection and aerospace industries up to four times faster.

The Christchurch-based precision engineering company's investment of over £100,000 has been installed to help cope with increased workloads and to expand its capability for other industry sectors.

Director Peter Bennet said: "The sliding head manufactures small and intricate parts very quickly - it's like having four machines in one.

"With its faster machining, set-up and turnaround times, it will enable us to meet customer requirements quickly and even more accurately - giving us a more versatile approach."

The sliding head is used for high-tolerance work (to 5 microns) in medium to large batch sizes using 316 stainless, brass and aluminium bar.

It features Windows-based programming and a telecom link for interchanging data direct with the manufacturer for an immediate solution to programming issues.

Peter said: "With a normal CNC the turret turns with its tools stations, but with this unit the tools stations move backwards and forwards separately, enabling you to drill and turn at the same time, and machine the front and back at the same time.

"All axis movements and even the opening and closing of chucks are implemented by servo motors rather than hydraulics or pneumatics on conventional CNC lathes, so operation is much faster."
