PAC helps Groveley on its way to SC21

Engineering TeamGroveley Engineering Precision is one of the first companies to work with the new Productivity and Competitiveness Programme (PAC) in its quest for a Bronze SC21 award, an aerospace and defence supplier accreditation.

PAC is operated by the Manufacturing Skills Alliance and as a result of opportunities identified by its initial PAC analysis, Christchurch-based Groveley will train its entire workforce to a minimum NVQ2 level in BIT (Business Improvement Techniques). SC21 (National Action Plan for 21st Century Supply Chains) is a change programme which aims to accelerate the competitiveness of the UK´s defence and aerospace industry by raising the quality performance of its supply chains.

It uses a common process for supplier development and improvement, with a set of improvement and relationship principles developed and adopted by larger businesses in the industry. Groveley's operations manager Stuart Leaper said: "We are one of the first companies to adopt the PAC programme. It's about lean manufacturing and quality which will be demanded by increasing numbers of companies in those industries."

Various performance and competitiveness measures were taken by the PAC analyst from the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service (SWMAS) so any improvement activities can be measured and compared at the end of the scheme. Stuart said: "This training will allow us to be more flexible and enable our customers to save costs without compromising quality or delivery, while together we maintain the pursuit of excellence."

At end of the first year Groveley hopes to gain the bronze SC21 award, after that it can advance to silver and gold levels. The PAC programme has bought together SWMAS, National Skills Academy and Train to Gain to help Groveley. Training is provided by South West Manufacturing Advisory Services working in partnership with local training provider Paragon Skills for Industry.
